Rangers International grabbed an important 2-0 win over Algerian champions MC Alger in the first leg of their CAF Champions League second preliminary round match. This took place at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta on Sunday.
Even though Rangers were down to 10 men from the 13th minute, MC Alger let in two late goals. Kenneth Igboke scored a penalty in the 84th minute, and James Emo followed with another goal in the 87th minute, giving the Flying Antelopes a solid win.
These late goals showed Rangers’ determination and gave them a two-goal lead to defend in the second leg in Algeria on Friday, 23 October. This win also boosts the Nigerian team’s chances in the continental competition after a tough previous round.
Rangers made it to the second preliminary round by beating AS Sobemap from Benin Republic on penalties. The tie ended 1-1 after both legs, but Rangers won 5-4 in the shootout in Lomé.
On the other hand, MC Alger reached this stage after defeating Nigerien team ASN Nigelec 5-0 on aggregate, following a goalless first leg. The Algerian club came to Nigeria as a strong team, having just won their domestic league title, but Rangers used their home advantage well with the late goals.
The two-goal lead gives Rangers a good edge, but they need to stay disciplined in the return leg if they want to qualify for the group stage. Rangers are one of Nigeria’s most successful clubs, with nine league titles, including their most recent one in 2026. They also won the African Cup Winners' Cup in 1977, making a significant mark in Nigeria’s football history.
Now, the Flying Antelopes will focus on the second leg in Algeria, where they must defend their lead against an MC Alger team eager to turn the tables. Winning over the two legs would secure Rangers a spot in the CAF Champions League group stage and bring them closer to competing with the top clubs in Africa.
