Rapper Rick Ross arrested for alleged assault on a woman

American rapper Rick Ross has been arrested in Miami Beach, Florida. He faces charges of battery by strangulation and battery linked to a domestic violence incident.

Ross, whose real name is William Leonard Roberts, was taken into custody by Miami Beach police early Thursday morning. He was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Centre at 6:10 am, according to Miami-Dade jail and court records.

The 50-year-old rapper has one felony count of battery by strangulation and one misdemeanor count of battery. Both charges are classified as domestic violence, CBS News Miami reported.

An arrest affidavit from The U.S. Sun states that a woman, who had been in a relationship with Ross for about a year, told the police he got angry after seeing she was tagged in an Instagram photo. The woman claimed that Ross questioned her about the photo and accused her of being with another man.

She told the police that Ross slapped her in the face before he continued to question her while she was in the bathroom. The affidavit noted that the woman said Ross hit her several times in the chest and then grabbed her hoodie collar, twisting it around her neck and choking her until she could not breathe.

The woman also claimed that Ross pulled her by her ponytail and slammed her against a wall. She said he hit her in the face while she was bent over, injuring her lip.

She alleged that Ross then pushed her to the floor, turned on the shower, and tried to spray her with the showerhead, according to The U.S. Sun.

Ross' lawyer, Bradley Horenstein, denied the claims against his client. He asked the public not to jump to conclusions.

"All I can say is that the allegations are false. He’s innocent. Everything is going to come out. We just ask that you allow the process to play out before rushing to judgment, because the truth will come in," Horenstein told CBS News Miami.

Ross' bond was set at $5,000 for the battery by strangulation charge and $1,000 for the battery charge, totaling $6,000. His arraignment is set for October 22, CBS News Miami reported.

This arrest came just days after Ross' former girlfriend, Jazzma Kendrick, claimed he physically abused her. Kendrick accused him in a series of Instagram posts, saying he injured her lip about a month earlier. She shared photos of the injury as well.

Yahoo reported that Kendrick said she left Ross after the incident, describing him as treating her like a "punching bag." It is not clear if Kendrick’s claims are related to the charges that led to Ross' arrest.

CBS News Miami also mentioned that authorities had not confirmed the identity of the alleged victim in this case.
