The House of Representatives has asked Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to stop turning away corps members from the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme. This request came up during a plenary session where lawmakers showed concern over the rising trend of MDAs refusing to take in corps members for their mandatory service.
The lawmakers said that the NYSC scheme is important for uniting the country and helping it grow. They believe corps members should have the chance to serve in different roles across Nigeria. They pointed out that rejecting corps members not only defeats the purpose of the NYSC but also takes away valuable work experience from the youth.
The House has directed its Committee on Youth Development to look into why these rejections are happening. They want the committee to ensure that all MDAs follow the NYSC rules. The committee is expected to give feedback to the House with its findings and suggestions on how to fix the problem.
In another matter, the lawmakers also asked for better support and welfare for corps members during their service year. They stressed the need for improved housing, stipends, and training to enrich the overall experience of corps members.
