Nollywood actress Ruth Kadiri has told couples to avoid stressing themselves with big weddings. She believes that the expectations around these ceremonies can harm marriages.
Kadiri explained that grand weddings often bring emotional and mental strain on couples. She pointed out that many people do not see how the stress of wedding planning can affect their new life as a married couple.
In a video shared online by Pulse on Sunday, Kadiri asked why couples who have dated happily for years often feel fear and doubt after their wedding. She believes that the stress of planning a wedding can change how people view marriage.
“I do think that big weddings put pressure on couples. It puts pressure on the marriage itself,” she said.
Kadiri suggested that couples should think about simpler wedding plans. She recommended completing traditional and legal processes, having a small guest list, and celebrating privately with family and close friends.
According to her, couples should not feel forced to have several ceremonies like engagement parties, court weddings, white weddings, and traditional weddings just because society expects them to.
The actress warned that flashy celebrations could expose couples to unwanted judgment and pressure from others. She encouraged young Nigerians to rethink the idea that a wedding's size or extravagance shows how successful a marriage will be.
Changing Societal Expectations
Kadiri called for a bigger change in society, especially regarding the pressure parents and relatives put on young people to be financially successful. She also spoke about the heavy expectations on firstborn children, who often carry the burden of family responsibilities and financial support.
She argued that success means different things to different people. It should not just be about money, career success, or meeting other people's expectations.
“Success means different things to different people,” she said. She added that a fulfilling life might just mean being at home with one’s children and showing them love.
Kadiri urged parents, families, and society to give young people more freedom to make their own choices without constant pressure. She pointed out that the expectations people face in 2026 can make it hard for them to enjoy life. She encouraged Nigerians to focus on their peace of mind and happiness over what society thinks.
