Sanwo-Olu, Abiodun urge calm as traffic jam worsens at Kara Bridge

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun have asked drivers to be patient as traffic remains very heavy around Kara Bridge and parts of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

They made this appeal after a long traffic jam that trapped many drivers on Tuesday night.

PREMIUM TIMES reported that there was also heavy traffic around Omole, Isheri, and Ojodu Berger, causing motorists to spend hours on the road.

Mr Sanwo-Olu shared a message on Facebook on Wednesday. He said he understood the frustrations of Lagos residents trying to leave the state and those moving within the city.

"I understand the frustration of Lagosians commuting out of Lagos and those going to their various destinations within the city, following a multiple accident involving trucks at Kara Bridge," he said.

He added that the situation was worsened by ongoing repairs on the bridge.

Sanwo-Olu mentioned that LASTMA officials, emergency response teams, security agencies, and other traffic management staff had been sent to the area.

"Our LASTMA officials, emergency response teams, security agencies, and other traffic management teams are on the ground working to ease congestion and keep traffic moving," he said.

He noted that the repairs would last about two weeks and that traffic would be controlled on the available section of the bridge during this period.

He urged drivers to follow the instructions of traffic officials and to make alternative travel plans if possible.

"I appeal to all motorists to please be patient, obey the directions of traffic officials, and plan their journeys where possible. Most importantly, we feel your pain. Please, stay safe," he said.

Abiodun calls for cooperation from drivers

In a separate statement seen by PREMIUM TIMES, Mr Abiodun said the government was aware of the traffic problems around Kara Bridge and nearby parts of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

He stated that TRACE personnel had been sent to work with security, emergency, and traffic management agencies in the area.

"TRACE personnel are working with relevant security, emergency, and traffic management agencies to clear obstructions, prevent further gridlock, and improve movement along the affected axis," he said.

Abiodun urged drivers not to drive against traffic or create new lanes, explaining that such actions could worsen the situation and delay emergency help.

He also asked commercial drivers and operators of heavy vehicles to follow the instructions of traffic officials.

"Our immediate priority is to protect lives, maintain order, and reduce the inconvenience being experienced by commuters," he stated.

Abiodun noted that the state government would keep monitoring the situation and provide personnel and resources until normal traffic flow was restored.

He thanked road users for their patience and cooperation.
