Senator Lere Oyewumi, who is the DG of the Imole Campaign Council and Osun West Senator, has strongly condemned the attacks on the homes of some leaders of the Accord Party. These attacks happened just before the Osun State governorship election. He called these incidents unwarranted, cowardly, and unacceptable.
Oyewumi carried out an on-the-spot check of the affected homes in Ikire and Ikoyi after receiving reports of political violence and vandalism. He said he visited the residence of Ambali Kondo in Ikoyi. He also checked on the homes of Owodunni Abiodun, known as Wocco, and Taofeeq Ajagun, also called Ultimate.
The senator also went to Akinola Paul's home, known as Halleluyah, in Oke Awo, Ikire. He visited the home of the Commissioner for Energy, Festus Adeyemo, as well as Alhaji Lateef's residence in Moro, Ikire. He also inspected Nureni Owoade's home in the Amukuku area of Ikire.
According to Oyewumi, he took time to assess the extent of the damage. He expressed his sympathy to the affected political leaders, their families, and supporters. "I strongly condemned the attacks as unwarranted, cowardly, and completely unacceptable in a democratic society," he said.
The senator pointed out that political differences should not lead to violence, destruction, or attacks on people's homes and properties. "Democracy is built on tolerance, dialogue, respect for differing opinions, and the freedom of every citizen to support the political party or candidate of their choice," Oyewumi added.
He praised the affected leaders for their courage, resilience, and commitment to their political beliefs, even after the attacks. He mentioned that these leaders had reaffirmed their commitment to peace. They assured him they would stay calm, respect the law, and remain steadfast despite what happened.
Oyewumi called on security and law enforcement agencies to find and prosecute those behind the attacks. He said, "I also assured the victims, affected leaders, and residents that appropriate security and administrative channels will continue to be engaged to ensure that the perpetrators are identified and brought to justice."
He stressed that no one is above the law and that every citizen deserves protection, no matter their political affiliation. Oyewumi urged Accord members, supporters, and residents of the affected areas to stay peaceful and resist any urge to retaliate.
"Violence will only deepen the pain and create further division among our people. As leaders, we must rise above provocation and continue to defend democracy through lawful and peaceful means. Violence has no place in a free and democratic society," he said.
He called for a thorough, fair, and quick investigation into the incidents. He insisted that those found responsible should face the full weight of the law. "Our people deserve peace. Our communities deserve security. And our democracy must be protected," Oyewumi said.
