Shettima to represent Nigeria at UN General Assembly

President Bola Tinubu has asked Vice President Kashim Shettima to stand in for him and lead Nigeria’s team to the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly, UNGA, in New York, USA.

Mr Shettima will head a strong team that includes Governor Siminalayi Fubara from Rivers State, Governor Dauda Lawal from Zamfara State, ministers, and other senior officials.

The 81st UNGA General Debate will take place from 22 to 28 September. This year’s theme is “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.”

During the General Debate, Mr Shettima will present Nigeria’s national statement. He will highlight Nigeria’s views and priorities on important global issues that affect national development, peace and security, economic growth, and international cooperation.

The vice president will also take part in high-level meetings during the UNGA week. These meetings will cover topics like the Right to Development, climate action, and other issues that are crucial for Nigeria and Africa.

Mr Shettima is set to join other world leaders at the traditional reception for Heads of Delegation. He will also have several bilateral meetings with leaders of other nations, international organizations, and development partners while at the General Assembly.

These meetings will give Nigeria a chance to push President Tinubu’s economic diplomacy, build strategic partnerships, and strengthen the country’s stance on changes in global financial systems, sustainable development, climate finance, and working together with others.

Mr Shettima will return to Nigeria after completing his activities in New York.
