Remilekun Bello, a wide receiver for Abia Warriors and a player for Team Nigeria in flag football, said the Showtime Flag Football League is the best thing for local athletes in the sport. Bello, who has won the Showtime championship twice, stated that the league offers players chances through contracts, better welfare, and strong competition.
“Showtime is the best thing that has happened to athletes playing in our local flag football league. It has given us a platform to compete, develop and be recognised for what we do,” Bello said.
He pointed out that the league's contract system gives players a stronger voice on their pay and welfare. “As a player, you have a voice. You can tell the team what you believe is good for you in terms of payment and welfare, and both sides can reach an agreement. That is very important for athletes,” he added.
Bello mentioned that better welfare motivates players to do well. “When players know that their welfare is being considered and that there is something meaningful to play for, it gives you extra motivation to perform,” he said.
The New Season and Rewards
Bello enters Season XV as a key player, having won back-to-back championships with Abia Warriors before Lagos Knights stopped their winning streak in the Season XIV final. The new season promises a reward pool of ₦60 million. This includes ₦15 million for the Showtime Bowl champions, ₦6 million for the runners-up, ₦5 million for the regular-season champion, and ₦4 million for the 5v5 Cup winner.
Bello also praised the league’s organisers for its growth. “I have to give credit to the organisers for what they are doing. The league keeps improving, the standard keeps rising, and as players we want to see that development continue,” he said.
