Football fans in Nkpor-Agu, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State are excited about the return of Nigerian international striker Simeon Tochukwu Nwankwo, known as Simy. He is set for a special homecoming celebration on June 21.
This event, called “The Homecoming,” will celebrate Simy’s impressive season in Saudi Arabia. It will also serve as a time for thanksgiving for his football journey and to look forward to more successes.
The day will kick off with a Thanksgiving Mass at Holy Cross Parish, Nkpor-Agu, starting at 8:30 a.m. This will be followed by an all-star novelty match at the United Primary School playing ground at 4 p.m.
Many well-known football figures are expected at the exhibition game. Former Super Eagles players Uche Nwofor and Ogenyi Onazi will join rising Nigerian stars like Chukwubuikem Ikwuemesi, David Nworah, and Francis Ezeh.
Simy’s Journey from Nkpor to the World
Simy’s story is one of the most inspiring tales in Nigerian football. He began his career in Nkpor-Agu before moving overseas. He played for Portuguese clubs Gil Vicente and Portimonense before making a name for himself in Italy. There, he played for Crotone, Salernitana, Parma, and Benevento.
Now in Saudi Arabia, Simy had a fantastic season with Al-Orobah, finishing as the joint-top scorer in the Saudi First Division with 28 goals. He has achieved many milestones, including being the first African player to be the top scorer in an Italian professional league. He scored 20 goals for Crotone in the 2019/20 Serie B season.
Simy also represented Nigeria at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, playing in matches against Croatia and Argentina.
