Eddie Howe Leaves Newcastle as Manager

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe is leaving the club right away. This news comes from BBC Sport on Thursday.

The decision followed talks between Howe and the club's management. Sources say that the 48-year-old has been thinking about his future at St James' Park recently.

Howe faced pressure last season after Newcastle struggled in the Premier League. The team finished 12th and lost 17 out of 38 league matches.

His last game was a tough 4-1 loss to Bristol City in a pre-season friendly on Wednesday.

Sources close to the matter say that Howe was caught off guard by Newcastle's transfer moves this summer. Still, he understood that the club needed to sell some players.

Earlier this year, Howe chose to stay at Newcastle despite the chance of losing players. But his view reportedly changed during the summer.

Newcastle's chief executive, David Hopkinson, said back in March that the club was not thinking about changing the manager "at the moment."

Howe's frustration grew after striker Alexander Isak left for Liverpool. This came despite Newcastle spending about £240 million on new players just a year ago.

The Magpies also lost key players this summer, including Sandro Tonali to Tottenham and Anthony Gordon to Barcelona. Arsenal is still eyeing captain Bruno Guimaraes.

Howe took over from Steve Bruce as Newcastle's manager in November 2021 and played a big part in the club's turnaround.

He ended Newcastle's 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy by leading the team to win the 2025 Carabao Cup. He also got the team into the Champions League in 2023 and 2025.

Newcastle made it to the last 16 of the Champions League last season but lost 8-3 on aggregate to Barcelona. Their Carabao Cup title defense ended in the semi-finals, and they didn't meet expectations in the league, finishing fifth in the 2024-25 season.

During his time at Newcastle, Howe achieved 84 Premier League wins in 179 matches. He also had 38 draws and 57 losses.

He recorded more Premier League wins than any other manager at Newcastle, while his 46.9 percent win rate is only bettered by Kevin Keegan.
