Six suspected bandits were killed by the Zamfara State Police and other security forces during an attempted attack on Kanoma Town and Gidan Daji Village in Kanoma District, Maru Local Government Area.
Yazid Abubakar, the police spokesperson, shared this news in a statement on Wednesday.
He said the attack happened around 11 a.m. on Tuesday. A large group of armed bandits came into the communities carrying heavy weapons. These included rocket-propelled grenades, general-purpose machine guns, anti-aircraft guns, and AK-47 rifles.
Abubakar explained that a joint security team quickly responded to a distress call. This team included police tactical operatives from the Maru Division, military personnel from Operation Fansar Yamma, members of the Violence Crime Response Unit, and local vigilantes.
βThe security team fought the assailants in a gun battle, forcing them to flee and stopping the attack. During the fight, six bandits on two motorcycles were killed,β he said.
He mentioned that several other bandits ran into nearby forests, possibly injured from gunshots. Thankfully, there were no casualties among security personnel or residents in the affected areas.
Abubakar stated that security has been strengthened in the area. Ongoing patrols aim to keep the peace, comfort residents, and find the escaping suspects.
βThe police remain committed to protecting lives and property. We urge residents to keep cooperating with security forces by giving timely and useful information,β he added.
This incident happened less than a day after the police reported that a joint security team successfully repelled a bandit attack. That attack took place after a two-hour gunfight along Gadar Manya in Anka Local Government Area.
