Troops of the Nigerian Army have rescued 16 people who were kidnapped and recovered two AK-47 rifles, three rocket-propelled grenade bombs, and 33 motorcycles during an operation in Niger State.

The operation took place on 5 November. Soldiers from the Army’s 18 Brigade acted on information about suspected terrorists moving from Mashegu Local Government Area towards Rijiyan Nagwamatse in Kontagora LGA.

In a statement on Friday, Adebayo Adewumi, the Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the 18 Brigade, said the troops set up an ambush along the routes believed to be used by the armed men.

He stated that the troops confronted the suspected terrorists, who had previously kidnapped residents. They neutralized an unknown number of attackers and rescued 16 victims.

The items recovered included two AK-47 rifles, seven magazines, three high-explosive RPG bombs, various ammunition, 33 motorcycles, and ₦4.1 million in cash.

Mr. Adewumi mentioned that the rescued victims received first aid before being handed over to authorities to reunite with their families.

In another operation on 3 November, troops intercepted suspected terrorists moving from Makuku village in Sakaba LGA, Kebbi State, towards Tungan Kawo in Rijau LGA, Niger State.

According to the army spokesperson, the troops engaged the armed men in a shootout, forcing them to flee into a nearby forest with injuries.

A follow-up search led to the recovery of five motorcycles, a mobile phone, and ₦644,300, among other items.

The army said they are keeping the recovered items in military custody for further action.

Mr. Adewumi quoted the Commander of the 18 Brigade praising the troops for their bravery and encouraging them to continue their fight against criminal groups in the area.
