On June 13, 1998, Nigeria pulled off one of the biggest surprises of the tournament. They came back from behind twice before Sunday Oliseh scored an amazing long-range goal to win the match in Nantes.
FIFA has recently called that goal one of the great moments in World Cup history. They said, “Today, we look back at Sunday Oliseh’s sensational goal for Nigeria against Spain at France 1998.”
FIFA also listed Spain 2-3 Nigeria among “The greatest FIFA World Cup upsets.” They noted that the Super Eagles, playing in their second World Cup, were not expected to challenge a Spanish team with stars like Fernando Hierro, Raúl and Luis Enrique.
This comeback is one of the most important matches in Nigeria’s football story.
The Associated Press reported Oliseh saying after the game, “This win was for 150 million Nigerians.” He added, “We showed Nigeria is not dead. Our problem now is to keep our heads.”
