Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda are working on a joint visa plan to help football fans travel easily during the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). This was announced by an official on Tuesday.
Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga is the Chairperson of the East African Community (EAC) Council of Ministers. She shared the news during a visit to the Arusha Pamoja AFCON Stadium. This visit included members of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA).
Kadaga, who is also Uganda’s First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for EAC Affairs, explained that the three countries are creating a special visa system. This system will make it easier for fans to move across borders during the tournament.
She mentioned that the new visa arrangement would allow fans to watch matches in different countries. It will also give them a chance to see tourist sites. Plus, it will open up business opportunities for hotels, tour guides and transport services.
Abdullah Makame, a member of EALA, pointed out that the success of the scheme will depend on the final visa rules. He added that how well these rules are put in place at border crossings is also important.
While touring the stadium, the group learned that the Arusha Pamoja AFCON Stadium is nearly finished. The construction is now at 95 percent completion. This stadium will hold about 32,500 fans.
The 36th AFCON will run from June 19 to July 17, 2027. This tournament will be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. It will be the first time that AFCON takes place in three countries.
