Three passengers have died after a train derailed on the Warri, Itakpe Train Service on Monday.
The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) confirmed the accident. They said emergency teams and relevant authorities have been sent to the site to help affected passengers and check the situation.
In a statement on Monday, Kayode Opeifa, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the NRC, said they are keeping a close watch on developments, according to Channels.
“The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) confirms that an incident involving the Warri, Itakpe Train Service (WITS) occurred today.
“Emergency response teams and relevant authorities are currently at the scene attending to the situation and providing necessary assistance,” the statement said.
Opeifa also mentioned that the NRC would share more details as investigations and rescue operations continue.
“The Corporation is closely monitoring developments and a detailed statement will be issued as soon as more information becomes available,” he said.
As of now, the reason for the derailment has not been officially given.
The Warri, Itakpe rail line is one of Nigeria’s main standard-gauge rail routes. It connects Delta and Kogi states and serves thousands of passengers traveling between the South-South and North-Central regions.
