President Bola Tinubu has sent his best wishes to famous Nigerian musician, Sunday Adeniyi Adegeye, known as King Sunny Ade, on his 80th birthday. He called him an example of musical talent and a cultural ambassador.
In a birthday message released on Tuesday by the State House, Mr Tinubu praised the juju music star for using his talent to share Nigeria's rich culture with audiences around the world.
"Today, I warmly celebrate Chief Sunday Adeniyi Adegeye, the legendary King Sunny Ade and an icon of Nigerian and African music, on his 80th birthday," the president said.
"For eight decades, you have exemplified musical excellence and cultural ambassadorship, enriching our nation and bringing joy to millions across generations."
Mr Tinubu highlighted how the musician's creativity, discipline, and passion have helped make juju music a cultural treasure recognized around the world.
He noted that King Sunny Ade's unique sound, which mixes guitar, talking drums, and other traditional instruments along with his lively performances, has earned him a special place in African arts and entertainment history.
Globalising Nigerian Music
King Sunny Ade was born on September 22, 1946. He is one of Nigeria's most well-known musicians and a key figure in making modern juju music popular around the globe.
He started his music career in the 1960s and formed his own band, the Green Spots, in 1967. He later became the leader of the African Beats and gained fame in Nigeria in the 1970s.
His big break came in the early 1980s when he signed with Island Records’ Mango label. His albums Juju Music (1982) and Synchro System (1983) showcased his unique mix of Yoruba music, electric guitars, percussion, and talking drums to a global audience.
Synchro System earned him a Grammy nomination in 1984, making him the first Nigerian artist to achieve this. His album Odu was also nominated for Best World Music Album in 1999. The Recording Academy recognizes him as a two-time Grammy nominee.
Mr Tinubu mentioned that King Sunny Ade's achievements go beyond entertainment. He pointed out that the musician has shown how Nigerian culture can reach people all over the world.
"As one of Africa’s most celebrated entertainers, you have brought the richness of our culture to audiences worldwide," the president said.
"Beyond your musical accomplishments, you have remained a proud ambassador of Nigeria, showing through your career that our cultural heritage can cross borders and connect with people everywhere."
The president also acknowledged King Sunny Ade's role in inspiring many upcoming musicians in Nigeria's creative industry.
"Your music has not only entertained, but it has also preserved our cultural identity, celebrated our traditions, and showcased the beauty and diversity of our country to the world," he added.
‘You Embody Excellence, Perseverance’
Mr Tinubu said the Nigerian government understands the importance of cultural icons like King Sunny Ade in promoting the nation’s identity and creative potential.
"As President, I deeply recognize and celebrate the immense contributions of our cultural icons. On this important milestone, I am especially grateful to God for the grace He has given you," he said.
"At 80, you embody excellence, perseverance, and service to the arts. Your achievements remind us that talent, when combined with dedication and commitment to one’s heritage, can create a lasting national legacy."
Mr Tinubu, on behalf of his family, the government, and the people of Nigeria, wished King Sunny Ade good health, wisdom, and many more happy years.
"May Almighty God bless you with good health, wisdom, and many more fulfilling years," he said.
