Tinubu launches reforms for Nigeria's football system

President Bola Tinubu has ordered a major reform of Nigeria’s football system. This is to fix the country’s ongoing issues in qualifying for important regional, continental, and global tournaments.

In a statement from his Spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, on Thursday, the president told the National Sports Commission to team up with the Nigeria Football Federation and other key players. Their job is to improve football governance, administration, development pathways, local competitions, and accountability.

Tinubu believes this reform is needed so Nigeria’s rich football talent, enthusiasm, and resources match up with stronger institutions and better performance.

“Football, Nigeria’s most popular sport and the greatest beneficiary of public support, investment, and national attention, has continued to struggle basically due to structural deficits within the system,” he said.

The president also instructed officials to connect with FIFA and the Confederation of African Football during this reform. This is to make sure Nigeria meets its commitments under international football regulations.

Tinubu urged football stakeholders and Nigerians to support the transition. He wants everyone to work together to create a stronger, more accountable, and successful football system.

He also directed the Chairman of the National Sports Commission to collaborate with the NFF Secretariat and relevant football stakeholders. Their goal is to ensure smooth operations in key football administration and promote a wide, consultative reform process.
