Tope Osoba's Family Shares Details About Her Death

The family of Yoruba Nollywood actress and producer Tope Osoba has shared details about her death. They said she was dealing with emotional distress, worries, and health issues before she passed away.

Her colleagues announced her death on Instagram on 5 August. They mentioned that she had been fighting breast cancer for a long time.

In a statement dated 12 August and signed by Damilola Osoba for the family, the Osoba family said Tope died on 4 August. They described her death as due to “a long spell of emotional distress caused by unmanaged worries, depression and self-medication.”

The family noted that Tope had recovered from a previous cancer battle. However, she became emotionally vulnerable after her mother died and faced personal struggles.

They described Tope as “a responsible daughter of the Osoba family of Abeokuta, Ogun State” and “a highly cerebral and resourceful daughter.” They also said she became emotionally troubled after losing her mother.

The family revealed that Tope reconnected with her paternal aunt, Revd Mother Kehinde Osoba Eritosin, in May 2025. This happened after Tope cut ties with her maternal family in Iperu and blocked their phone numbers.

Tope reached out to Revd Mother Osoba for help, wanting to be welcomed back into the Osoba family. She sought parental care during her difficult times.

“Since then, she has been confiding in Revd Mother Kehinde Osoba about her life situations and marital troubles, always requesting her to intervene in her life matters,” the statement said.

The family explained that Revd Mother Osoba adopted Tope after discussing it with family members. She introduced Tope to her own children and added her to the family chat group to monitor and support her.

The statement said Revd Mother Osoba stayed in touch with Tope and supported her. About five weeks before Tope's death, she sent her an aso ebi for a family event in Victoria Island, Lagos. Sadly, Tope could not pick it up from the dispatch rider.

The family said concerns about Tope’s health grew in the days before her death.

Tope made a “frantic call” to Revd Mother Osoba on 31 July, asking for help regarding her worsening health and issues with her fiancé, whom she had lived with for about two years.

While receiving treatment on 2 August, Tope reached out to Revd Mother Osoba again. She asked her aunt to speak with her fiancé and sent his phone number.

Revd Mother Osoba acted quickly. She contacted Tope’s fiancé and asked him to meet her urgently about Tope’s situation.

“He promised to see Mother Osoba on the following Tuesday after Tope died,” the family said.

They also revealed that Revd Mother Osoba had invited Tope’s fiancé to discuss her troubling health and marital issues. However, the meeting did not happen before Tope passed away.

On 4 August, Revd Mother Osoba got a call from Tope’s friend and hairdresser. The friend said Tope had not slept the night before and was acting strangely, making alarming statements about death.

Revd Mother Osoba then asked for Tope to be brought to her church in Ikorodu for medical and spiritual help.

While she was at an eight-day service for the late Supreme Head of the C&S Unification Church in Abule Egba, Lagos, she received a call from the Divisional Police Officer of Igbogbo Police Station, Ikorodu.

The DPO told her that Tope was in police custody after causing a traffic disturbance in the Ita-Elewa area of Ikorodu.

The family said Tope acted strangely in traffic. She got out of the vehicle and started shouting, which led to people calling the police.

Revd Mother Osoba confirmed Tope was her daughter and told the DPO she would come to the station. But due to traffic delays, she requested that Tope be released and taken to her church for care.

The police later released Tope to her friend and two maternal sisters who came from Sagamu.

Instead of waiting for Revd Mother Osoba to return, Tope’s handlers decided to take her to another spiritual centre in Ikorodu.

They took her to a celestial church where prayers were said, and she was given water and drinks. Later, her maternal cousins decided to take her to their home in Sagamu.

Revd Mother Osoba called Tope and her friend several times on their way back, but no one answered.

She was unaware that Tope's maternal cousins had taken her to Sagamu with her agreement.

The family said Tope later had strange reactions and got worse after drinking cold water during the trip.

“She later had strange body reactions and health relapse in the vehicle after taking some cold water,” the statement said.

Her cousins took her to a private hospital in Sagamu when her condition worsened. The doctor deemed her condition critical and referred her to the Ogun State University Teaching Hospital (OSUTH) in Sagamu.

“However, on getting to OSUTH, according to those with her, Tope passed away in the vehicle even before the doctors at OSUTH attended to her,” the family stated.

Revd Mother Osoba found out about Tope’s death the next day, Wednesday, after trying to reach Tope’s friend.

The friend told her that they had tried to reach her before leaving the church in Ikorodu and taking Tope to her maternal relatives in Sagamu.

The family said Tope died in the vehicle while they were in Sagamu.

The Osoba family released this statement to clarify details about Tope’s death and asked the public to let them mourn in peace.

“The above clarifications have become necessary as we would like all sympathisers and the general public to be calm and allow us to mourn our daughter at this very sad period of her unexpected death.

“God is the ultimate giver and taker of life, and it will not be an honour to Tope to sensationalise her demise on social media but to give her a befitting burial so that her soul can rest in peace,” the statement read.

The family thanked Tope’s friends, colleagues, fans, and the public for their support after her death. They said a memorial service would be planned for Tope, with the date to be announced later.
