Tottenham Hotspur has agreed to sell Argentina defender Cristian Romero to Atletico Madrid. The club shared the news on its website on Saturday.

Romero joined Tottenham from Atalanta in 2021. Over five years, he played 156 matches for the club in all competitions.

He was an important player in the Tottenham team that won the UEFA Europa League in the 2024/25 season. After that, he was named captain for the 2025/26 season.

In a statement on its website, Tottenham said, “Signed from Atalanta in 2021, ‘Cuti’ was a key player in our UEFA Europa League triumph of 2024/25 and was named captain for the 2025/26 campaign.

“His 32 appearances in all competitions last season took his tally to 156 in our colours.”

Romero came to Tottenham after winning the Copa America with Argentina. He later became just the second Spurs player to win the World Cup.

He was part of Argentina’s team that beat France in the 2022 World Cup final in Qatar. He also won another Copa America title in 2024.

The defender played in a second World Cup final with Argentina this summer.

According to Tottenham, “A Copa America winner just before his arrival, Cuti became only the second Spurs player to win the World Cup when Argentina beat France in Qatar in 2022.

“He won the Copa America again in 2024 and reached a second World Cup Final this summer.”

Romero started his career at Belgrano in Argentina. He later moved to Europe and played for Genoa and Juventus before joining Atalanta.

“Born in Cordoba, Cristian began his career at Belgrano and had spells at Genoa and Juventus before signing for Atalanta,” Tottenham said in the statement.

The club ended its message by wishing the 28-year-old defender good luck in the future.

“We wish Cuti all the best for the future,” Tottenham said.
