US President Donald Trump has slammed the Nobel Prize after not winning the peace prize again, calling this year's choice “disgraceful and embarrassing.”
At a rally in Syracuse, New York, on Saturday, the president shared his disappointment. He said the US, with him as the leader, deserved the peace prize and should have been awarded it.
He repeated the false claim that he had settled eight wars since taking office. Trump claimed he was “about to settle or win two more. Russia-Ukraine and Iran.”
“I will tell you what,” he said, sounding serious. “Iran will be very quick one way or the other: that they give us everything or they don’t exist any longer,” he declared.
He described the Nobel committee’s decision not to award him the peace prize as an “indelible stain on the country of Norway.” He also said the committee made “such a disgraceful and embarrassing decision.”
“The Nobel Peace Prize has been forever discredited by a handful of radical ideologues who are anti-democracy and really enemies of civilisation,” he said.
Trump has long expressed his wish to win the prize and campaigned hard for it for months last year. He voiced his anger when the award went to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado.
Ms Machado later gave her medal to Trump, calling it a gesture for his commitment to Venezuela’s freedom after the US took President Nicholas Maduro. Trump said this was “a wonderful gesture of mutual respect,” but the Nobel committee said the prize was not transferable.
