United States President Donald Trump will be at the World Cup final on Sunday. The match is between Spain and Argentina. The White House confirmed this will be his first appearance at the tournament, and he will attend the grand finale.
Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt shared this news at a briefing on Thursday. She said, “His attendance will cap what has been the most watched, most secure, and most successful World Cup in American history.”
Leavitt added, “This is a fitting conclusion to a tournament that showcased America’s ability to host the world on the grandest stage.”
Before the final, Trump will attend a reception for FIFA at Trump Tower in New York on Friday, according to Leavitt. FIFA President Gianni Infantino had announced in June that Trump would be at the final in New Jersey. He is also set to present the trophy to the winning team, but the White House had not confirmed this until now.
Leavitt said she does not know if Trump will support Spain or Argentina. Last week, he criticized Spain at a NATO summit for not helping with the Iran war.
Trump has not attended any World Cup games yet. Still, he has been involved in some controversial moments during the tournament. Earlier this month, he asked FIFA’s Infantino to look into a red card given to US striker Folarin Balogun in a match against Bosnia.
FIFA decided to suspend Balogun’s one-game ban before the Americans played Belgium next. Even with Balogun, the US team lost badly, 4-1.
Trump often claims he played a big part in getting the US the chance to co-host the 2026 World Cup, along with Canada and Mexico. This decision was made by FIFA during his first term as president.
Infantino has also built a close relationship with Trump. He awarded Trump a newly created FIFA peace prize at the World Cup draw in Washington last year. This happened just months before the US started military actions against Venezuela and Iran.
Trump presenting the World Cup trophy follows a previous event that caused some controversy. Last year, he presented the Club World Cup trophy to Chelsea after they beat Paris Saint-Germain in the same stadium in New Jersey.
He handed the trophy to Chelsea captain Reece James but did not leave the stage right away. Trump ended up joining the team’s celebrations, which surprised the players. He later kept a replica of the trophy in his office.
