Filmmaker Tunde Kelani has shared that a new episode of his documentary series will honor the late actor, scholar, and cultural figure Gabriel Kola Oyewo.
Mr Kelani made this known in an Instagram post on Tuesday. He praised the late actor's significant input to Nigerian theatre and cinema.
The episode will showcase an archival interview with Mr Oyewo. This will give viewers a chance to reflect on his life, career, and impact on the creative scene.
"Sometimes before we continue telling stories, we must first honour the people who made those stories possible," Mr Kelani said in the post.
He described Mr Oyewo as an actor, scholar, and teacher who devoted his life to the arts.
This documentary episode will be part of Mainframe Productions' Film Heritage Digital (FMD) series.
Mr Kelani mentioned that he worked with Mr Oyewo on several projects, including Koseegbe, O Le Ku, and Saworoide.
The filmmaker highlighted the late actor’s performances and his role in keeping Nigerian cultural stories alive through film.
According to Mr Kelani, the episode will feature an interview recorded three years ago during the making of the documentary series Heroes of the Yoruba Travelling Theatre.
He noted that the interview offers viewers a chance to hear directly from Mr Oyewo about his journey and experiences in the arts.
Mr Oyewo was well-known for his roles in Nigerian theatre and film, especially in Yoruba-language productions.
He was also an academic who played a big part in theatre education in Nigeria, mixing performance with teaching and research.
His career spanned stage performances, university theatre, and roles in films that helped shape Nigerian cinema.
Mr Oyewo passed away on 12 June 2026, at the age of 80.
Through this documentary episode, Mr Kelani hopes to keep alive the memory of an artist whose work influenced many generations of Nigerian performers and audiences.
