Two suspected kidnappers were killed during a shootout with police in a forest in Imo State. The police also rescued two victims who had been kidnapped.
The Nigerian Police Force Public Relations Officer, Ani Iniedu, stated that the operation was based on an intelligence report. This report led police and local vigilantes to the forest where the victims were held.
When the security team arrived, they were attacked by the kidnappers, which led to a gunfight. According to Iniedu, two of the suspected kidnappers were killed in the shootout, while others fled with gunshot wounds.
“The hoodlums engaged the operatives in a gun duel, resulting in the neutralisation of two kidnappers while others escaped with gunshot injuries,” he said. The police also confirmed that the two kidnapped victims were rescued safely.
“The two kidnapped victims were successfully rescued unharmed,” he added. Sadly, during the operation, a member of the vigilante group was shot and later died at the hospital.
“Regrettably, one vigilante sustained a fatal gunshot injury and was confirmed dead at the hospital,” he stated. The State Criminal Investigation Department in Owerri is currently looking into the incident.
