The Ogun State Police Command has killed two suspected kidnappers, rescued a victim, and recovered a gun, N2.2 million, a mobile phone, and other items.

The command’s spokesperson, Oluseyi Babaseyi, a deputy superintendent of police, shared this news in a statement on Wednesday in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State.

Mr Babaseyi said that the Anti-Kidnapping Unit achieved this during ongoing operations against kidnapping in the state.

He mentioned that the victim was taken on June 11 in Ogbe village, located in the Obafemi Owode Local Government Area.

The command quickly sent out intelligence and tactical teams to rescue the victim and catch the kidnappers.

“Determined to ensure that those responsible did not escape justice, operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit intensified follow-up operations and started a coordinated manhunt for the suspects.

“Acting on reliable intelligence, the operatives successfully tracked down members of the gang to their hideout in the state,” he said.

Mr Babaseyi said that constant surveillance and intelligence gathering put pressure on the gang, leading to the victim's safe release last Thursday.

He added that the police then launched a coordinated manhunt and traced the gang members to their hideout.

The police spokesperson reported that the suspects fired shots while trying to resist arrest, which led to a gun battle with the operatives.

He said two suspected kidnappers were killed, while some gang members managed to escape despite being injured.

According to him, a search found a single-barrel gun, one used cartridge, a mobile phone, and N2.2 million believed to be from their criminal activities.

He noted that efforts are ongoing to capture the suspects who fled, and the investigation into the case is still in progress.

Mr Babaseyi quoted the Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, praising the Anti-Kidnapping Unit for their skill and bravery during the operation.

Mr Ojajuni reiterated the command’s commitment to intelligence-led policing and continuous operations against kidnappers and other violent criminals.

The commissioner urged residents to stay alert and provide timely and credible information to help fight crime in the state.
