Two men have been given a total of 24 years and five months in prison for their parts in a deadly road accident that killed a UK-based Nigerian, Sylvester Abayomi, in Manchester.

The men, Uways Hussain, 20, and Usmon Mahmood, 23, were found guilty of causing the fatal crash in March 2026 on Kingsway, Manchester, which led to Abayomi’s death.

A statement from Greater Manchester Police, obtained on Monday, revealed that Hussain was sentenced to 11 years and eight months, while Mahmood received 12 years and nine months.

This case is said to be one of the first in the UK where a passenger was found guilty of aiding and abetting in a death caused by dangerous driving.

According to GMP, investigations showed that the two spent the night before the crash driving dangerously around South Manchester, filming themselves as they sped excessively.

The police reported that the vehicle involved belonged to Mahmood, who let Hussain drive it all night long. Mobile phone footage retrieved by investigators showed them frequently driving over 100mph on roads where the speed limit was 30mph.

GMP noted that the footage revealed them running red lights and weaving through traffic without caring about the safety of others.

The statement said, "The sentences follow a night of dangerous driving, during which the pair filmed themselves consistently travelling at speeds of over 100mph on 30mph roads.

“In several instances, they reached speeds over 130mph, and just before the crash, they were recorded at 139mph. At one point, they stopped at a petrol station, where footage shows Mahmood inhaling from a balloon while sitting in the passenger seat.

“Further footage shows Mahmood inhaling from a balloon while Hussain drove over 100mph, and he also seemed to be inhaling from a balloon."

GMP added that the deadly crash happened around 4:36 am in March 2026 at the junction of Green End Road and Kingsway.

Abayomi was reportedly on his way to work and entered the junction on a green light when he was hit by the speeding Volkswagen Golf driven by Hussain, who ran a red light.

The police said, "Sylvester was on his way to work and entered the junction on a green light, believing it was safe to go.

“He was then hit by a Volkswagen Golf driven by Hussain, which had gone through a red light at a very high speed."

The statement added that emergency services rushed to the scene after the crash, but Abayomi died from his injuries. It also mentioned that after the collision, the two discussed plans to escape and hide evidence.

GMP noted that an automatic crash alert from an Apple Watch worn by Hussain recorded conversations between the two men right after the crash.

“During this alert, both men were heard talking about escaping the scene and trying to decide what evidence they needed to get rid of from the car.

“They also talked about reporting the vehicle as stolen. Soon after, they ordered an Uber to leave the area," the statement explained.

GMP revealed that officers acted quickly and arrested both men within 12 minutes of the first emergency call.

“We got our first report at 4:37 am, and within 12 minutes, officers located, caught, and arrested the two men.

“Data from the Volkswagen Golf later confirmed that the car reached a speed of 139mph just before the fatal crash,” the police concluded.
