American voters took a stand during the 2026 Midterm Elections. They showed they want to take back their country from Trump's supporters, known as MAGA. Many Republicans also seem ready to reclaim their party from this group. They made their voices heard through their votes.
After the elections, President Donald Trump seems shocked by the defeat he faced. He can’t believe that the image he built around himself is fading. He initially accepted the loss, which put Democrats in charge of Congress and the Senate. His fellow Republicans lost seven seats. But then he threatened, saying, “Democrats will send things that are insane and I will veto them.” He may not realize the new Senate won’t allow him to act as he used to, when he got away with serious issues.
Trump and his supporters lost for many reasons. One big reason is that they didn’t grasp how inflation is hurting everyday Americans. When I visited the US in October, people complained about high grocery and fuel prices. They were also tired of violent actions by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. Even with Trump and his allies talking about war in Iran, Americans seemed worn out by conflict. On November 2, the day before the elections, Trump claimed there hadn’t been any US attacks on Iran for two months. He questioned if there was even a war. He thought attacking Iran would help his party’s low poll numbers. Instead, he just made things worse for himself.
He might not see that many people in the US are against war. Trump claimed that high oil prices because of his actions against Iran were actually good for the US. But he doesn’t understand that his war and the rising oil prices have caused economic problems that also hurt Americans. The global economic downturn is affecting people on the streets in the US.
Trump also started tariff wars with many countries, including Canada and China. Many Americans are tired of conflicts, whether they are economic, military, or about immigration.
He seems to think he’s a modern cowboy, taking down bad guys like Iran’s leaders. But this behavior is more shameful than honorable.
The US is struggling to protect its allies in the Gulf from Iranian retaliation. European countries ignored Trump’s calls to invade Iran. The US couldn’t even secure the Strait of Hormuz. This has made Trump lose respect. Many Americans see that the US is not winning the war against Iran.
Trump has also made the US look weak and lawless. He ordered the abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Adela Flores, without proper charges. They are now in US detention while the US holds them illegally. Instead of pressing charges, the US is preventing elections in Venezuela and taking its oil and gas.
Voters in the US are also tired of their country being isolated globally. Even traditional allies in Europe have turned away from Trump. He threatened war to take Greenland from Denmark.
Despite everything, Trump’s actions have made many voters want change. They want to reclaim their country from the MAGAs. This was clear when they voted. Many Republicans might not be unhappy to see Trump lose his grip on the party.
Another issue hurting Republicans was the choice of candidates. For example, Ken Warren Paxton, a former Texas Attorney General, was the Senatorial candidate. He had been indicted on three criminal charges back in 2015. In contrast, the Democratic candidate, James Dell Talarico, was a young teacher who fought for better school funding. Talarico won with 5,445,121 votes, while Paxton got 4,249,752 votes. In North Carolina, Michael Whatley, a Trump supporter, received 1,643,088 votes. But Democratic candidate Roy Cooper won with 2,467,963 votes.
There were some positive results from the Trump effect as well. The elections saw Keisha Lance Bottoms become the first Black woman Governor in 250 years and Deb Haaland from New Mexico become the first Native American woman Governor. The elections also brought in the first Muslim Senator and the first Gen Z woman in Congress. Notably, four Nigerian-Americans won elections in Maryland, Washington, Texas, and Pennsylvania.
World reactions to these changes in the US are mixed. Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei doesn’t believe there will be changes in US policy. He stated, “Those who still harbour even the slightest hope that the behaviour of the hegemonic system might change through partisan or factional shifts are seriously mistaken.”
The European Union hopes the new Congress will keep supporting Ukraine in its battle against Russia. This is different from Trump’s attempts to end the fighting.
Overall, the results of the US midterm elections are a win for humanity. Many hope for a safer world now that Trump is out of the White House.
