Uzoho moves to new club after five years with Omonia

Super Eagles goalkeeper, Francis Uzoho, has left Omonia Nicosia. He is joining another Cypriot First Division team, Omonia 29is Maiou. This change ends his five-year stay with his previous club.

Uzoho confirmed his move on Saturday. He shared a heartfelt farewell message. He thanked everyone at Omonia, especially the fans, for all the love and support he received during his time there.

“What a journey it has been for me with this badge on my chest, filled with so many memories. It was a privilege to represent this prestigious club,” Uzoho wrote on Instagram.

“A heartfelt thank you to the fans; the affection you have shown me from day one until my last day will always be cherished. I’d hate to say goodbye, but it’s not in my hands. I will always love this club. Goodbye.”

The 27-year-old first joined Omonia on loan from Deportivo La Coruña in July 2019. He later returned to the club permanently in the summer of 2021. He leaves after playing 77 matches in all competitions, letting in 84 goals and keeping 29 clean sheets.

Uzoho had been the second choice behind Fabiano at Omonia. He was told he could leave before the summer transfer window closed, right after the club advanced to the group stages of the Europa League.

Three Cypriot clubs showed interest in him before he chose early-season leaders Omonia 29is Maiou. He is expected to be their first-choice goalkeeper. His experience in the Cypriot league gives him an edge over others vying for the spot.

Although details of his contract are not public, sources say he signed a three-year deal. There is also an option for an extra year based on his performance in the coming seasons. Uzoho was part of Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets team that won the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2013.
