Vandals have damaged six transmission towers on the important Apir-Lafia line in Nasarawa State. This has caused major power supply issues, according to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).

The attack happened on 30 May around 1:15 a.m. during heavy rain.

Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s General Manager for Public Affairs, shared details in a statement from Abuja on Wednesday. She mentioned that they attempted to fix line II at 2:08 a.m. after it tripped but failed to restore it.

Mbah explained that they traced the lines to find the problem. This investigation showed that critical parts of towers T125 to T130 were damaged, confirming that vandalism occurred in those areas.

Because of this incident, both Apir, Lafia 330kV Transmission Lines I and II are out of service until the damaged towers are rebuilt.

"TCN engineers have been sent to the site to check the extent of the damage and find out what materials are needed to start restoring normal service along the corridor," she said.

In the meantime, the Lafia 330kV Transmission Station is getting power through the Lafia, Jos line as a temporary solution.

Mbah added that they are trying to reduce the impact of the outage on electricity customers in the areas covered by the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) and Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JEDC).

She also strongly condemned the ongoing vandalism of power transmission facilities. It threatens years of investment in the power sector.

The company urged local communities and the public to be alert and report any suspicious activities around transmission sites to security agencies or the nearest TCN office.

According to her, everyone needs to work together to protect national grid assets and ensure a steady power supply.
