Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface might see some action in the Bundesliga soon. This comes after his quick exit to the dressing room during the team’s recent 4-3 win over Mainz, according to GOAL.
The Nigerian striker went straight down the tunnel after coach Carles Martinez made his last substitution in the 84th minute. He brought on Jonas Hofmann for Patrick Schick. Boniface was the only recognized striker on the bench because Christian Kofane is sidelined for weeks with a torn thigh muscle from playing for Cameroon.
The 25-year-old has only played once this season. He spent five minutes on the pitch and assisted a goal in the 3-2 loss to Elversberg on the first matchday.
Martinez said he did not see what happened during the match.
“If that is what happened, we will speak to him,” he mentioned.
“I can understand that every player wants to help the team. At the same time, decisions like that are part of football.”
Club Officials Respond
Sporting director Simon Rolfes downplayed the incident.
“Perhaps he went to the dressing room a little too early today,” he said.
He also noted that the club likes players who show emotion but want them to act with the team in mind. He expressed satisfaction with Boniface’s fitness and behavior in recent months.
Boniface was not registered for the Europa League. This means he will miss the match against Lech Poznań on Thursday. With Schick not likely to get much rest, the Bundesliga could be Boniface’s best chance for more playing time.
His exclusion from the Europa League also hints at his possible transfer. There was a €70m deal to Al-Nassr that fell through at the last minute in January 2025.
