Spanish club Villarreal have signed Beninese striker Merveille Akinocho from Nigerian academy Beyond Limits. The Ikenne-based club shared the news on Tuesday.
"From Beyond Limits to the Yellow Submarine. Merveille Akinocho has officially signed for Spanish side Villarreal CF on a long-term deal," the club announced.
"The striker takes a new step onto the European football stage. Congratulations, Merveille!"
Akinocho had been on Villarreal's radar for some time but chose to wait until he turned 18 before making the move.
Joining the U-19 Team
He will start with Villarreal’s U-19 team. There, he will continue to develop and get used to European football. This move will also let him play in competitions like the UEFA Youth League as he aims to progress to the club’s professional team.
While in Nigeria, the Beninese forward played for Beyond Limits in the Creative Championship League. He scored 12 goals and provided three assists last season.
