The Swiss football federation announced on Tuesday that forward Breel Embolo could not fly to the United States with his teammates for the World Cup. This was due to an issue with his visa.
The 29-year-old player from Rennes was set to depart with the squad for Los Angeles from Zurich earlier that day.
“Unfortunately, Breel Embolo is currently unable to travel to the United States with the team,” the ASF said.
“His ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorisation) authorization had been approved until this morning.
“However, at 10:30 a.m., we learned that his ESTA application had been put under further review.
“We are in contact with the relevant authorities and expect that Breel will either join the team later today or travel tomorrow and join the squad then.
“We will keep you updated as soon as we have more news.”
The federation did not say why Embolo’s visa was under review.
In April, the former Schalke player received a 45-day suspended fine of 3,000 Swiss Francs ($3,820) for threats he made during a night out in Basel back in 2018.
Embolo scored during Sunday’s 4-1 friendly victory over Jordan, marking his 24th international goal in his 86th appearance for Switzerland.
Switzerland will start their Group B campaign against Qatar on June 13. They will also face Bosnia Herzegovina and co-hosts Canada in the group stage.
On Saturday, La Nati will play Australia in their last friendly before the tournament.
