A spokesperson for the Tinubu/Shettima Presidential Campaign Council, Segun Sowunmi, has asked Nigerians to re-elect President Bola Tinubu in 2027. He believes a second term will help the government push its economic reforms and speed up development.

Mr Sowunmi made this call during a press conference on Thursday. He stated that Nigeria should stick to its current development path as the country gets ready for another presidential election.

"My position is clear: I support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term because I believe Nigeria must keep moving forward," he said.

He explained that keeping Tinubu in power would help to deepen the reforms started since he took office in May 2023. These reforms aim to restructure the economy, attract investment, and strengthen public finances.

Mr Sowunmi said the 2027 election is a chance to build on what the administration has already done instead of changing course.

He mentioned that a second term should focus on speeding up reforms and making sure that economic improvements lead to better living conditions for everyday Nigerians.

"The next phase should be about taking the national agenda to the next level: more investment, more production, more industrial capacity, better infrastructure, expanded opportunities for young people, stronger communities and a wider distribution of prosperity," he said.

Major economic measures from Mr Tinubu’s government include removing the petrol subsidy and unifying the foreign exchange market.

These reforms have helped improve government income and some areas of economic stability, but they have also led to higher living costs, causing public dissatisfaction.

Mr Sowunmi maintained that these reforms offer a chance to create a more productive economy. He wants Nigeria to rely less on crude oil and focus more on manufacturing, agriculture, technology, and other sectors.

He also called for ongoing investment in infrastructure, electricity, education, and healthcare. He believes that improvements in these sectors will help businesses grow and create jobs.

Regarding electricity, he mentioned the opportunities from the Electricity Act 2023. This act allows states to develop and manage their electricity markets. The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) said that by May, 15 states had started to regulate their own electricity markets.

The commission aims to encourage local investment and improve regulation.

Mr Sowunmi highlighted the Nigerian Education Loan Fund as one of the programs designed to make tertiary education more accessible. He believes young Nigerians need better access to education, technical skills, finance, and business opportunities.

He called on the government to ensure that economic reforms bring clear benefits for families. This includes better job opportunities, improved access to essential services, and higher living standards.

"The ultimate purpose of this national transformation is to improve the lives of ordinary Nigerians," he said.

Mr Sowunmi also connected economic growth to national security. He argued that farmers, traders, and businesses need safer conditions to grow and thrive. He called for stronger security institutions and plans to tackle the economic and social issues that lead to insecurity.

He stated that Nigeria has the potential to become a major hub for manufacturing, agricultural processing, and logistics in West and Central Africa. But to achieve this, the country will need consistent policies, stronger institutions, and ongoing investment.
