A 53-year-old woman, Nelly Monday, has been sentenced to one month in jail for dumping waste in a drainage channel in Lagos State.

Monday was arrested in Meiran on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, for allegedly throwing refuse into the drain during the rain.

The Lagos Waste Management Authority announced this in a statement on Thursday. It said she was taken to the Magistrate Court at Bolade, Oshodi, where she admitted to the crime.

The statement said, “Nelly Monday, 53, who was arrested in Meiran on Wednesday, 9 September 2026 for dumping in the drains during the rain has been convicted of the offence.

“She was arraigned before the Magistrate Court sitting at Bolade, Oshodi, where she pleaded guilty to the offence and was sentenced to one month in prison.”

LAWMA warned residents against throwing waste in unauthorized places, especially in drainage channels.

The authority called such actions environmental offences that come with penalties under the law.

It said, “The Authority will continue to work with relevant enforcement agencies to identify and sanction environmental offenders across Lagos.

“Residents are urged to dispose of their waste responsibly and through approved channels.”

This incident comes as the Lagos State Government and environmental agencies step up efforts to stop improper waste disposal. They are focused on practices that block drainage channels and lead to flooding.

LAWMA urged residents to follow approved waste disposal methods and avoid throwing refuse in drains and other unauthorized locations.
