The Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission gave out certificates of return to 17 newly elected local government chairmen and their deputies on Tuesday.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, this event came after the peaceful local government election held on September 26 across the state.
Dr Ibrahim Yabani, the YOSIEC Chairman, spoke at the event in Damaturu. He urged the new council leaders to move away from politics and focus on governance and serving the people well.
He said, “The campaign season is over now. It is time to focus on governance, service delivery and the progress of Yobe State.”
Yabani encouraged the chairmen to build on their successes. He asked them to aim for excellence and start more meaningful development projects in their areas.
He also told them to honor the trust their constituents placed in them. They should promote inclusive governance and improve the lives of people in their communities.
He added, “Your communities placed their trust in you; you must reciprocate this honour by redoubling your efforts, initiating impactful grassroots projects and promoting inclusive governance in the new administration.”
Yabani emphasized the importance of continuous improvement. He asked even councils that are doing well to work harder for greater achievements.
He credited the smooth conduct of the election to support from the state government and what he called “Gov. Mai Mala Buni’s policy of non-interference in the electoral process.”
“We highly commend the state government for providing the critical financial support necessary for the conduct of this exercise and, most importantly, for maintaining strict policy of non-interference.”
He also mentioned that the commission received two awards from the Coalition of Civil Society Organisations and the Visiting Journalists Association. These awards recognize its leadership, performance, and achievements in running elections.
“I dedicate these awards to the entire YOSIEC team; they represent a victory for our collective integrity,” Yabani said.
