The Lagos Police Command has arrested a 22-year-old suspect for allegedly stealing a police uniform to pretend to be a police officer.

The command shared this news in a statement on its official X handle on Tuesday. They said the suspect stole a police officer’s bag that had a camouflage uniform, warrant card, mobile phone, ATM card, and other personal items.

The statement explained that the suspect later wore the stolen camouflage uniform to impersonate a police officer.

Residents became suspicious when they noticed that his behavior and mannerisms did not match those of a real police officer.

The statement said, “The suspect subsequently wore the stolen camouflage uniform in an attempt to impersonate a police officer. However, vigilant passersby became suspicious after noticing that his behaviour and mannerisms were inconsistent with those of a genuine officer.

“The residents questioned him and discovered that he was an impostor and handed him to the Police for further investigation.”

The command mentioned that the suspect is now in police custody. They added that investigations are ongoing and he will be charged in court once the investigation is complete.

They praised the vigilance and responsibility of the residents. Their actions showed how effective the “See Something, Say Something” campaign is and highlighted the need for public participation in keeping communities safe.

However, the police condemned any form of jungle justice. They stressed that Lagos State laws do not allow people to take the law into their own hands, no matter the alleged crime of a suspect.

The command urged the public to report suspected offenders to the police or other law enforcement agencies for proper investigation and prosecution according to the law.

They also thanked Lagos residents for their ongoing support. They encouraged everyone to stay alert and report any suspicious people, movements, or activities, while letting the law handle matters.
