Two Nigerian athletes, Temitope Adeshina and Ella Onojuvwevwo, are in Glasgow for the 2026 Commonwealth Games. The track and field events start today, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
The athletes joined Team Nigeria’s camp at different times over the weekend.
Adeshina holds the Nigerian record in women’s high jump. This will be her second Commonwealth Games after competing in Birmingham 2022.
The 27-year-old faced travel issues but arrived in Glasgow on Saturday. Now, she is ready to compete.
Adeshina had a strong 2026 NCAA season. She won all available indoor and outdoor titles and remained unbeaten. She has a season’s best clearance of 1.97m and is seen as one of Nigeria’s top medal hopes in field events.
Onojuvwevwo, who trains at LSU, is making her debut at the Commonwealth Games. She is expected to run in the women’s 4x400m relay.
The 21-year-old comes to Glasgow in great shape. She has a season’s best time of 49.47 seconds in the women’s 400m.
Nigeria’s hunt for more medals starts today with the men’s 100m heats. Reigning national champion Favour Ashe and Fakorede Adekalu will aim for spots in the semi-finals.
Miracle Ezechukwu will also run in the women’s 100m heats. Sade Olatoye will compete in the women’s hammer throw, and Eucharia Iyiazi will take part in the women’s F57 para shot put event.
