Nigerian sprinter Kayinsola Ajayi says he is staying grounded after winning two races in a row in the Diamond League. He beat reigning world champion Oblique Seville in both races.
Ajayi built on his great form on Saturday by winning the men’s 100m at the London Diamond League in 9.84 seconds. This is the second time he has finished ahead of Seville, having also done so at the Prefontaine Classic earlier this month.
The 21-year-old matched the Nigerian record for the third time this season. He outpaced Seville, who came in second at 9.87 seconds, while Great Britain’s Romell Glave finished third with a personal best of 9.97 seconds.
Instead of celebrating his latest win, Ajayi said he is happy with his regular performance. He remains focused on the hard work that has made him one of the world’s fastest sprinters this season.
"I am doing the right things, I am keeping my focus, and I am really enjoying my running. I am happy with the race today," Ajayi said after the race on Saturday.
This win came after another strong showing in Eugene two weeks ago. There, Ajayi also ran 9.84 seconds to defeat Seville and American Christian Coleman in a competitive field. That was one of the biggest wins of his career.
Ajayi's performances show he is consistent in a breakthrough season. He has now run 9.84 seconds three times this year, plus a wind-assisted 9.72 seconds at the NCAA Championships.
His latest win in the Diamond League gives Team Nigeria a big boost ahead of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Ajayi is expected to lead the country’s charge for medals in the sprint events.
