Akwa Ibom At 39: Governor Eno Talks About Building for the Future

Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State says the hard work of the state's founding fathers set the path for its growth over the years.

Mr Eno shared this in a speech to celebrate the 39th anniversary of Akwa Ibom's formation in Uyo on Wednesday.

The governor stated that the state has enjoyed 39 years filled with faith, resilience, sacrifices, progress, and grace.

"Today, we honour those who laid the foundation, past and present leaders, workers, farmers, teachers, clergy, professionals, entrepreneurs, and community leaders.

"We are here because many hands built before us, so we have a sacred duty to build for those who will come after us," he said.

He mentioned that since he took office three years ago, he knew that the government’s main job was to serve the people.

Mr Eno said his administration has made significant strides, completing no fewer than 1,500 kilometres of roads and about 43 bridges.

As part of the 39th anniversary celebrations, the government is launching projects like roads, schools, and healthcare facilities.

He added that his administration is dedicated to keeping the free and compulsory education policy at primary and secondary levels.

"We have given out N1.69 billion as bursaries to students. We have also built model primary schools, equipped them with modern facilities, and hired 3,000 teachers.

"Our government has also worked on transforming Akwa Ibom College of Education into a University of Education," he said.

Mr Eno mentioned that 258,000 people, including the elderly, have signed up for the state-managed health insurance scheme.

"Every local government area in the state has an ambulance service for emergency situations," he added.

He said the government has obtained palm oil seedlings and other farming supplies, giving grants to 1,700 farmers to increase their production.

"No fewer than 4,000 youths have been trained at Bumedi and Dakkada Skill Acquisition Centres. We have also given out over N2 billion in entrepreneurship grants.

"Youth development centres are being built to guide our young people's talents into technology and creative industries," he said.

Mr Eno said the administration has built 500 ARISE Compassionate Homes for poor and vulnerable citizens.

He also noted that the government has paid more than N98 billion out of the N111 billion it inherited from previous administrations as gratuities and other payments.
