The Yorùbá say that when a ram pulls back, it is getting ready to push forward. The Trump administration has caused a lot of harm to global organizations and to the US itself. You might say the US is more exhausted now because of Trump's actions than it would have been otherwise. Its withdrawal will be tough, but it is possible and needed.

If you listen to the Trump supporters talk, you might think the US is under attack from all sides. They paint a picture of an America with a broken economy, which everyone is trying to exploit. They say only Trump can save it. They describe a country stuck in pointless wars and losing its identity to foreigners.

But this gloomy view is more fitting for Russia. Russia has changed from being one of the two superpowers after World War II to a smaller economy with nuclear weapons. The Soviet Union, which it was part of, was kept in check by a global system set up by the US after World War II. This system was meant to protect individual rights and stop the spread of socialism.

If the weakened Soviet Union was a success of the post-World War II order, how did China escape that control? It was not because the US lost strength. Rather, China changed from a communist system to a state-run capitalist one. The changes started by Deng Xiaoping in the late 1970s led to China joining the World Trade Organization in December 2001.

One result of the global order after World War II is clear in multicultural societies. The local populations often feel threatened by immigrants whose different values seem to hurt their economies. Because of this, nationalist parties now challenge traditional parties as Europe searches for solutions.

Is America weaker now than it was in 1945? Not really. It is still the top economic power, even if its share of global trade is smaller than before. The US dollar might be less dominant in global reserves, but it still gives the US a significant advantage. Because of the dollar's strength, the US can borrow money at low costs and sell its debts at high prices.

But the US is clearly tired. So are the global institutions it built. Many people have called for a renewal of international governance. This need comes from changes happening around the world. The world is evolving, but not because of diversity or immigration. Economic ties, lower birth rates in the West, and technology have all impacted economies worldwide.

In Europe, the post-World War II order has led to societies where the locals feel overrun by immigrants with different values. This has allowed nationalist parties to rise as they try to find answers. In the US, similar political divides have happened, especially within the Republican Party.

Despite these challenges, the world is coming together more as the US pulls back. The US needs to invest more in its promises. This is how it should be. The US is still at the forefront of creating new technology. It has struggled to limit global access to its innovations. But this new direction creates gaps. The effects of disruptions in global supply chains will take time to show. With technology benefiting those who can use it well, a world less dependent on the US may gain more from its advancements.

The Yorùbá wisdom holds that when a ram pulls back, it is preparing for a stronger push. The Trump administration has damaged global institutions and affected the US itself. You could argue that the US is more tired now because of Trump's actions than it would have been otherwise. Its withdrawal will be tough, but it is both possible and necessary.
