The Anambra State Ministry of Health has told all mortuary owners and operators to register their businesses. They also need to renew any expired licences. This is as per the Public Health Law of Anambra State.

The News Agency of Nigeria reported that this announcement came from Dr Chukwulobelu Ugochukwu. He made the statement on behalf of Dr Afam Obidike, the Commissioner for Health, on Monday.

The notice says that all mortuaries working in Anambra but not registered must start the registration process immediately. The ministry wants mortuaries with expired registrations or those that need renewal to fix their status quickly.

It also mentioned that hospitals that offer mortuary services must register their mortuary units separately. This is necessary no matter what the hospital's registration status is.

Registration for All

The notice highlighted that this rule applies to all mortuary facilities that are operating illegally or without the right approvals in the state.

The ministry explained that this action is part of the government's effort to reform healthcare. The goal is to make the healthcare system better and more reliable.

They said this initiative will help with regulatory oversight and ensure proper standards in mortuary services. It will also help control the spread of infectious diseases during outbreaks and prevent illegal activities linked to the mishandling of corpses.

“The ministry is updating its database of registered mortuary facilities across the state to enhance monitoring, regulation and compliance with public health regulations.

Operators who are affected have until June 5 to finish their registration and licence renewals. After this deadline, full enforcement and inspections will start across the state. Those who do not comply or operate illegally will face penalties according to the law,” the ministry said.

The ministry urged everyone involved to keep supporting efforts to improve healthcare services in Anambra State.
