APRA Receives Africa PR Legacy Award

The African Public Relations Association (APRA) has received the Africa PR Legacy Award. This award recognizes APRA's long-term contribution to public relations in Africa.

The award was given to APRA at the 2026 ASCOM Communication Summit and Awards. This event took place on 17 September at CRRAE UMOA in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

APRA is the first group to win the Africa PR Legacy Award.

A communications company in Paris, which focuses on African communication systems, nominated APRA for the award. After reviewing the nominations, the jury acknowledged APRA’s 50-year legacy. They appreciated APRA's commitment to unity, standardization, collaboration, and ongoing dialogue in the public relations field across Africa.

ASCOM informed APRA about the award. They praised the Association’s vision and strength in creating a professional body that has a presence all over Africa. They also noted APRA's efforts to unite practitioners to discuss the current and future state of public relations.

At the Summit, Michel Russel Lohore, the CEO of ASCOM, praised APRA for its long history of promoting teamwork among public relations experts in Africa. He highlighted how accountable public relations and strategic communication help in Africa’s growth.

Receiving the award on behalf of APRA President Arik Karani, APRA Secretary General Omoniyi Ibietan thanked ASCOM, the jury, and the nominators for this recognition.

Ibietan stated that the award is an important acknowledgment of APRA’s 50 years of work in the field. He emphasized APRA’s ongoing commitment to improving public relations across the continent.

“This recognition honors the many public relations practitioners who have helped build APRA and advance our field in Africa. It also reminds us to keep APRA as a place for professional teamwork, sharing knowledge, ethical practices, and the growth of public relations in Africa,” he said.

The Africa PR Legacy Award comes as APRA looks forward to the next stage of its 50-year journey. They promise to keep working on collaboration with governments, professional bodies, partners, and communication professionals throughout Africa.
