Australia Leads Medal Table as Nigeria Holds Fifth Place

Australia has taken a strong lead in the medal table at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Over half of the participating teams have won medals as the competition nears its end.

The latest medal standings released on Saturday, as seen on the Glasgow 2026 website, show Australia at the top with 128 medals. This includes 55 gold, 30 silver, and 43 bronze. This total is more than the combined gold medals of England and Canada, who are right behind them.

England is in second place with 80 medals overall, which includes 17 gold, 34 silver, and 29 bronze. Canada is close behind, also with 17 gold medals, but has 15 silver and 21 bronze, making a total of 53 medals.

The host nation, Scotland, is in fourth place with 10 gold, eight silver, and 16 bronze medals, totaling 34 medals. Nigeria is the highest-ranked African country in fifth place, having won 18 medals, nine gold, six silver, and three bronze.

New Zealand and South Africa are both tied at 25 medals each. However, New Zealand is in sixth place with seven gold, 10 silver, and eight bronze medals. South Africa has the same number of gold medals but fewer silver medals.

The top 10 is rounded out by Malaysia, Wales, and India. Other countries like Jamaica, Kenya, and Northern Ireland have also claimed at least one gold medal.

The medal table shows a big gap between the top nations and the others. Of the 74 Commonwealth Games Associations in Glasgow, only 38 have won at least one medal. This means 36 nations are still looking for their first medal.

Australia's performance has been impressive, with its 55 gold medals making up nearly one-third of all the golds won by the 38 teams that have earned medals so far. This shows Australia’s strong position at the Games.

Smaller nations have also had great moments. Grenada, Dominica, the British Virgin Islands, and The Bahamas each celebrated a gold medal even though they won just one medal overall. Countries like Rwanda, Tuvalu, Papua New Guinea, Pakistan, and Malta have also won their first medals with bronzes.

Among African countries, Nigeria is leading ahead of South Africa, Kenya, Cameroon, Uganda, Ghana, Mauritius, Namibia, Zambia, and Lesotho. This highlights Nigeria as the best-performing nation in Africa at this year’s Games.

The 23rd Commonwealth Games started on July 23 and features athletes from 74 Commonwealth Games Associations competing in 10 sports. The Games will wrap up on August 2, with more medal events to come and many nations hoping to improve their standings before the closing ceremony.
