Nigeria Shines at Commonwealth Games, Leads Africa After Day Four

Team Nigeria is doing well at the 2026 Commonwealth Games. After Day Four, the team is in fourth place on the medals table. Nigeria is leading all African countries and is ahead of the hosts, Scotland.

After four days of competition in Glasgow, Nigeria has won 10 medals, six gold and four silver. This puts Nigeria behind only Australia, England, and Canada in the medal count.

Australia is at the top with 59 medals, which includes 26 gold, 13 silver, and 20 bronze. England is second with 32 medals, while Canada is third with 21 medals. Scotland, despite being at home, is in fifth place with five gold, four silver, and two bronze medals.

Nigeria's gold medals have come from para powerlifting and weightlifting. These are two sports where Nigeria continues to excel.

The medal win started with para powerlifting stars Esther Nworgu, Folashade Oluwafemiayo, and Riluwan Idris, who all won gold. Roland Ezuruike, Esther Oyema, and Rita Ferdinand added silver medals to the count.

In weightlifting, Edidiong Umoafia won the men’s 71kg title. He set a Commonwealth Games record total of 319kg.

Onome Omolola Didih then followed with an outstanding performance in the women’s 53kg event. She set both Commonwealth Games and Commonwealth records in the snatch, clean and jerk, and total lift. This earned Nigeria its fifth gold medal.

The reigning Commonwealth champion, Rafiatu Folashade Lawal, then brought home the sixth gold medal. She defended her title in the women’s 58kg class while breaking Commonwealth Games records in all three lifts.

Ruth Asuquo Nyong secured the fourth silver medal for Nigeria. She finished second in the women’s 48kg weightlifting event.

These strong performances have kept Nigeria ahead of South Africa, Kenya, Ghana, and Uganda. Nigeria is also above Scotland in the gold medal standings.

This impressive showing highlights the hard work from months of preparation. Team Nigeria had a high-performance training camp in Aberdeen. The National Sports Commission has also focused more on athlete welfare.

With athletics, wrestling, boxing, and more weightlifting events still to come, Team Nigeria is on track for one of its most successful Commonwealth Games ever.
