After deciding to play for the USA instead of Nigeria and England, Folarin Balogun is set to compete in the World Cup with the USMNT. He is excited to make a mark in America. ABIODUN ADEWALE talks to him about his dreams in this interview with Get French Football.
Many people are looking at you as a key player for the attack at this World Cup. Do you feel a big responsibility for the USA this summer?
Yes, I do. This is a chance for me. It’s the biggest sports event in the world. Millions, even billions, will be watching. It’s my opportunity to show my skills. This is what we all dream of as kids.
With pressure comes responsibility. But I am excited. It is important to carry my club performance to the international level and be an important player.
How do you turn this pressure into a good thing, not a bad one?
I believe it comes from the work you put in every day. If you train hard, when the opportunity comes, there is nothing to fear. But if you are not doing well in your club before the World Cup, then there is more pressure. That is why I said at the start of the season that focusing on my work in Monaco is key. If I have a good season there (43 games, 19 goals, five assists), it will help me in the World Cup.
Playing at home, being a key player for your country; this moment could change your life. Do you agree?
Yes, I agree. Scoring goals in the World Cup and taking the country far can change your career. This is exciting, not something to be nervous about. I am looking forward to it.
What are your most memorable moments from the World Cup?
I would say the most recent final, France vs Argentina. There are others, but that match was one of the best I have seen. It shows how important the World Cup is. I believe my teammates are also very excited.
The USMNT usually ranks in the top 16 in the world. What is your goal in this tournament?
I want to go as far as possible. I know it won’t be easy. But we want to believe. Why not? Our goal is to go as far as we can. It is important to set small goals. First, get out of the group, then prepare for the knockout stage.
Do you feel that soccer is getting bigger in the USA?
I hope so. When I am in Europe, I focus on European football. I want to see America support soccer when I come back in the summer. That would make me happy. It is also important for the country, and I believe they want that too.
Which country has the best squad?
If we look at the players on paper, I would say France. They have a strong squad. But the World Cup is not only about who has the best team on paper. It depends on many factors.
Talking about Mauricio Pochettino, he has mentioned, ‘Why not us?’ He is trying to boost the team’s belief. What has he brought to the squad?
He brings belief and a fighting spirit. He is a great coach. He has a big task ahead. Our aim is to go far in the World Cup. He has made the squad more competitive. I am excited for the summer and to see how we perform. I want to make the country proud.
Do you think this World Cup will mean more for American citizens?
Yes, I hope so. I dream of American fans being as passionate as those in Europe. There is a lot of potential for soccer to grow in the USA. I hope the World Cup helps with that.
With all the global problems, can this World Cup act as an escape?
As a player, I have my views about the world. But I need to focus on my job. My job is to play football. By doing well, I can touch many lives and help people. I do not get into politics because that is not my role. I am focused on having a great World Cup in America and making my country proud. If I do well, it will bring joy to many.
