Spanish striker Gonzalo Garcia has joined Fulham from Real Madrid. This move brings him back together with his old coach Alvaro Arbeloa. Both clubs announced the transfer on Monday.
The 22-year-old had a great season last year, scoring eight goals for Madrid. Six of those goals were in La Liga. Notably, he scored a hat-trick against Real Betis in January.
Garcia has signed a contract with Fulham that lasts until 2031. The club also has an option to extend the deal for another year.
Spanish media say the transfer fee is about 40 million euros, which is around 46 million dollars. It is also reported that Madrid kept a 30% sell-on clause in the deal.
Fulham appointed Arbeloa as their head coach earlier this summer. He previously worked with Madrid’s youth team before stepping up as head coach after sacking Xabi Alonso in January.
Garcia is not the only young Spanish player moving from Madrid to west London. Attacking midfielder Cesar Palacios, who is 21 years old, also joined Fulham. He recently started playing for the Real first team under Arbeloa.
Madrid, on the other hand, has hired Portuguese veteran Jose Mourinho as their new coach. This change comes as they aim to rebuild their squad after not winning a major trophy for two seasons.
