Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey is asking Fulham fans to stay patient with their new manager, Álvaro Arbeloa. The team is trying to bounce back from a tough start to the Premier League season, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
Fulham has lost all three of their opening league games against Chelsea, Sunderland, and Crystal Palace. They have no points as they prepare for Saturday's match against Liverpool at Anfield.
Even with these disappointing results, Bassey sees some good signs in Fulham's play. He believes the players are slowly getting used to Arbeloa's way of doing things after the Spaniard took over in the summer.
“I’m excited. You can see from the way we’ve played that there’s a lot of positives,” Bassey said in an interview on Fulham’s official website.
“It’s a journey. We’ve only been with him for two months or so, so it’s very new, and it’s going to take time to adjust.”
Bassey has played in all three league games and has been the captain under Arbeloa. He also praised the manager for staying calm during the tough start.
Now, Bassey will lead Fulham into a tough match against Liverpool. The 26-year-old knows they will face a strong team at Anfield.
“It’s not going to be easy. You know what’s coming when you play Liverpool; they have top players,” he said.
“It’s just about doing our homework and seeing how we can hurt them.”
Bassey is embracing his captaincy role, calling it a huge privilege. He insists this role has not changed how he leads the team.
“Being able to captain this club is unbelievable,” he said.
“I’m just myself and I try to help everyone.”
Bassey joined Fulham from Ajax in 2023 and has become an important player for the team. He was named the club’s Player of the Season for the 2024/25 season and has been a regular under Arbeloa.
Bassey is also catching the eye of Inter Milan. Fulham is reportedly willing to discuss a new contract with him.
His current contract runs until 2027, and the club has an option to extend it by another year.
