Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has rejected rumors linking him to a possible presidential ticket with former President Goodluck Jonathan for the 2027 election.
The governor's response came after social media claims suggested he might be Jonathan’s running mate. This followed Jonathan being named the presidential candidate of a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party led by Kabiru Turaki.
Jonathan was named the faction’s presidential candidate during a special national convention in Abuja on Saturday. Although he did not attend, a federal lawmaker from Bayelsa State, Fred Agbedi, received his certificate of return on his behalf.
The rumors picked up steam after Nuhu Sada, a member of the African Democratic Congress, shared on X that reports hinted at Mohammed being paired with Jonathan for the upcoming presidential election.
In a post on his verified X account on Sunday, Mohammed denied being part of those political plans. He said his political goal is to represent Bauchi South Senatorial District with the Allied Peoples Movement.
“Thank you for your interest in my political aspirations. However, for the sake of clarity, my focus remains firmly on contesting for the Bauchi South Senatorial District seat under the platform of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM),” Mohammed wrote.
He also urged people to disregard any conflicting reports. “Any reports suggesting a different political course should be disregarded as speculative and inaccurate,” he added.
PUNCH Online reports that Mohammed recently left the PDP and joined the APM due to ongoing leadership issues and internal conflicts within the main opposition party. His latest statement seems aimed at clearing up rumors about his political future and confirming his commitment to the senatorial race in 2027.
