A building that was sealed by the Department of Development Control has collapsed on Abidjan Street, Wuse Zone 3, Abuja. Emergency teams have started search and rescue operations.
The FCT Police Command got a distress call about the incident around 7:45pm on Monday.
Josephine Adeh, the spokesperson for the police, said a response team was sent to the scene right away.
Adeh mentioned that emergency workers from the National Emergency Management Agency, Federal Road Safety Corps, Federal Roads Maintenance Agency, Federal Fire Service, Security Service Department, and the Federal Capital Territory Administration joined the rescue efforts.
She said early findings indicated that the building had already been marked and sealed by the Department of Development Control.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the building has earlier been marked and sealed by the Department of Development Control, Abuja,” Adeh stated.
As of the time of the statement, no casualties had been reported. Search operations continued to find out if anyone was trapped under the debris.
“So far, no victims have been confirmed. However, search and rescue operations are still ongoing to identify and rescue any persons who may be trapped in the rubble,” she added.
The police also said an investigation is in progress to find out how the building collapsed and what caused it.
“Investigation is still ongoing to determine the circumstances and possible cause of the building collapse,” the statement said.
The police asked residents to stay calm and alert. They advised people to keep away from the area to help emergency responders carry out their work smoothly.
The command urged the public to quickly report any suspicious activities or emergencies using their emergency lines.
