Co-hosts Canada equalised in the second half to draw 1-1 with Bosnia and Herzegovina on Friday. This was the first World Cup match ever held in Canada.
Cyle Larin scored for Canada after Jovo Lukic put Bosnia ahead with a header in the 21st minute in Toronto.
With this result, Canada earned its first point in World Cup history. Previously, they lost all six games in the 1986 and 2022 tournaments.
Lukic's goal from a corner kick got the small but excited Bosnian fans at Toronto Stadium cheering loudly.
Canada dominated play in the first half but could not create real chances. In the 17th minute, Jonathan David had a clear shot at goal, but Bosnian keeper Nikola Vasilj easily handled it.
In the 30th minute, Ismael Kone had a great chance but shot well over the net. The crowd of tens of thousands, dressed in red, groaned in disappointment.
The second half started the same way, with Canada pushing forward but still unable to score. Bosnia’s Sead Kolasinac saved a certain goal by deflecting a shot from David onto the crossbar, keeping Canada from scoring.
But Larin found the net in the 78th minute, bringing a wave of excitement to the mostly Canadian crowd of 43,000.
In the closing minutes, Canada almost took the lead but narrowly missed a chance just before the final whistle.
The match also attracted some famous faces. Ryan Reynolds from Vancouver and Mike Myers, a Toronto native known for Saturday Night Live and Austin Powers, were among those who attended the game at the home of Toronto FC.
