The Democratic Republic of Congo made a strong return to the FIFA World Cup with a 1-1 draw against Portugal on Wednesday. This result denied Cristiano Ronaldo and his team a win in their Group K opener.

The Leopards are back at the World Cup for the first time in 52 years. They got here by beating Nigeria in the African qualifying playoffs and overcoming Jamaica in the Intercontinental playoffs.

The game

Portugal seemed ready for a strong start when João Neves scored from Pedro Neto’s cross in the sixth minute. This early goal showed why they are favorites against a Congolese team playing in their second World Cup.

But DR Congo did not back down. Yoane Wissa shot just wide, and Cédric Bakambu tested the Portuguese defense as the African team found their rhythm in the match.

Portugal had more of the ball but struggled to create clear chances against a solid Congolese defense. Bruno Fernandes nearly made it 2-0 when he passed to Nuno Mendes, but goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi made an excellent save.

The Leopards got rewarded for their effort just before halftime. Wissa rose unmarked at a corner kick and headed the ball past Diogo Costa. This was DR Congo's first-ever World Cup goal, bringing the score to 1-1.

After the break, Portugal pushed hard for a winning goal. João Cancelo thought he had scored, but his goal was called offside. Ronaldo, in his sixth World Cup, finally got a chance late in the match but could not convert.

DR Congo also tried to grab a famous win. Bakambu hit the post during a strong second-half performance.

In the end, neither team could score again, and they shared the points.

Implication

For DR Congo, this draw is a big achievement in their journey back to the World Cup. After more than five decades away, they are back on football's biggest stage.

Portugal will worry about their weak attack and Ronaldo's failure to make an impact as they look for a better performance in their next Group K match.

Wednesday's result keeps Group K wide open as they look forward to the next matches involving Colombia and Uzbekistan.
